Sermoneta is located in a strategic place, along the Piedmont road that connected Rome and Naples after the Appian Way became swampy. Its history is closely intertwined with the Caetani family, and here is the seat of their Foundation.
On its hill it is one of the best preserved castles in Italy. Around 1500, for a short time, it was controlled by Lucrezia Borgia who helped make it grow in value.
The importance of the Caetani family and the consideration recognized by the papacy are witnessed by the involvement of Onorato Caetani IV, as commander of the papal infantry at the Battle of Lepanto (1571).
