Vallecorsa

The name of the town seems to reflect its geographic location: on a ridge along a valley with pathway between the Latina valley (Ciociaria) and the plain of Fondi.

With the Barbarian invasions, Vallecorsa was the boundary of the dominions of the Fondi that they needed to control for access to the mountains behind them and the pass of Vallecorsa. Hence, the village was born in the Middle Ages as a military stronghold.

In 1343 it participated in the war against Terracina and at the end of the fourteenth century all the town was involved in the wars as a result of the Western Schism, that had just happened to Fondi.

From the Aquila family the estate passed to the Caetani, grandchildren of Boniface VIII. In the fifteenth century it became a possession of the Colonna family who kept it until the abolition of the feudal system.

The Colonna involved it in their dynastic adventures opposing the papacy and for this the town was repeatedly involved in local wars.

From the eighteenth century it recorded an increase of the population that had found an important economic resource in the cultivation and marketing of olive oil and with the name "Ogliararo" Vallecorsano made its appearance as a feature of the economy of southern Lazio.

Vallecorsa has been one of the centres involved in brigandage, both for the number and the role of shepherds and farmers that became brigands. After the unification of Italy many inhabitants emigrated.

In Vallecorsa was shot the principal scenes of "Two Women" by Vittorio de Sica starring Sophia Loren.
