Churches & Places of Worship

The sanctuary of Saints Medici and Martyrs Cosmas and Damiano is located on a small hill at the foot of Monte Leuci in Pontecorvo.

The first historical news is a long-term lease in August of 955 preserved in the archive of the abbey of Montecassino.

In this document it is clear that before one thousand, in Pontecorvo there only existed a destroyed church dedicated to St. Cosmas and and some ancient devotion to the Saints Doctors.

The church of St. Bartholomew is on the highest point of the town of Pontecorvo and was completely rebuilt after the war. The facade was redesigned to look together like the bell tower, the tower of Rodoaldo.

The interior has several recent frescoes of Monzio Compagnone.

In the baptistery and in the nave you can admire some beautiful paintings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and some fragments of sculptures belonged to the previous building: a lion of pre-Christian times, a frieze used as an altar shelf and various limestone panels carved in low relief with symbolic designs.

The church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows dates back to 1300.

It houses the historic effigy of Maria SS. Sorrows the patron of the town of Pignataro Interamna.

At the church door there is a very ancient fragment of a Lombard Cross (prior to 1000) that remains the oldest memory of the original church.

The Our Lady of Sorrows Statue is a masterpiece of art and, according to local tradition, seems to have been carved out of pear wood by a unknown Neapolitan artist of 1400s.

Inside, the church is adorned with a cycle of frescoes by the painter Giovanni Bizzoni .
