Frosinone, Church of Saint Lucia

A first church dedicated to Saint Lucia was built in Frosinone in the sixteenth century by Bishop Ennio Filonardi as a place to bury those condemned to death.

In its place was later built the building of the Bank of Italy.

A new church of Saint Lucia was built in 1840 in the shape of a small temple in neoclassical style in the centre of Frosinone.

This small building has miraculously remained standing through the terrible bombing of the Second World War that destroyed 95% of buildings.

Frosinone. Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows

The shrine of Our Lady of the Snows was built in Frosinone on a small rural church.

This church was built at the end of the sixteenth century following a miraculous event.

It was May 10, 1675, and the Madonna began to sweat.

The devotion of the faithful was so strong that in one year they built a full church with sacristy, bell tower and furnishings.

The church was badly damaged by the bombing and was completely rebuilt in the 1950s.

The sanctuary is home to a community of devotees.

In the church there is a fresco of the sixteenth century portraying the Madonna of the Snow with Saints Hormisdas and Silverio and an altarpiece by Filippo Balbi representing the Madonna della Cintura.

The church of St Benedict in Frosinone dates back to 1134 and was then rebuilt in Baroque style after 1750.

The interior has a single nave, covered with a barrel vault with side windows. The sides of the aisle are richly decorated side chapels. Under the baroque altar there are the remains of a martyr.

Among the paintings inside include Our Lady of Good Counsel, a painting linked to a miraculous event of 1796 when Madonna changed colour and shape while women prayed in front of her.

The bells of the small bell tower date back to the eighteenth century and were made from the famous Cacciavillani factory.

The bell tower is also home to another eighteenth-century bell with the coat of arms of the city of Frosinone, which was found in the ancient town hall.

For the richness of its paintings, the church of St. Benedict is considered the Art Gallery of Frosinone with works from the seventeenth century that were saved because the church is one of the few buildings not destroyed by the bombings of World War II.

Frosinone. Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Like many buildings of the Catholics religion, even the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Frosinone was built on a pagan temple.

We are at the highest point of Frosinone and here stood the acropolis of ancient Frusino with the temple dedicated to the god Mars.

Already in the eighth century, the church was the cathedral of an ancient diocese of Frosinone that then joined the Diocese of Veroli.

The church was later rebuilt in the Middle Ages assuming a Romanesque style of which traces remain in the 68 meters high bell tower.

The bell tower has three rows of mullioned windows surmounted by an octagonal dome and is considered the 'symbol' of the city.

The cathedral took on its present appearance in the eighteenth century with a late Baroque shape reminiscent of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome

The interior of the church has three naves separated by Corinthian pilasters and the church had to be partially rebuilt after the bombings of World War II.

Inside are the canvases painted in 1641 by Sermenti, a disciple of Guido Reni, depicting the Madonna with Saint Anne and Saint John with the angels. The church contains other works by contemporary artists.

At the sides there are the bronze statues of the two popes of Frosinone Saints Hormisdas and Silverio, patrons of the city.

Serrone. Hermitage of Archangel St Michael

The hermitage of Archangel St Michael is resting on a rocky ridge at an altitude of 1100 meters in Serrone.

It is a pleasant stop for those who, following the paths, want to climb Mount Scalambra on foot.

The Benedictine monastery dates back to 600 and was probably founded by St. Benedict in person, during a contemplative stay in the company of three crows that had shown him the way.

His right hand print is visible in the rock.
