Alatri. Church of Health

The Church of Health (chiesa della Sanità) owes its name to a medieval hospital of Alatri.

The hospital went into disuse with the opening of the large hospital of San Benedetto of Alatri.

Inside there are frescoes dating from the fifteenth century, including a Madonna with pronounced belly, a Pietà attributed to Antoniazzo Romano and a Magdalene.

The building is privately owned.

Alatri. Church of XII Marie (12 Marys)

The Church of XII Marie is located outside the town of Alatri along the road to Fumone.

It is typical of the religious building that was being built in the fourteenth century by expanding a previous sacred shrine.

The building has a single nave and inside it are interesting frescoes with twelve representations of Mary hence the name of the church.

Some frescoes are attributed to the late Gothic painter Antonio da Alatri and his aides.

Alatri. Church of the Magdalene

The Church of the Magdalene dates from the late eleventh century and in 1196 was dedicated to the penitent Magdalene.

The building is located outside Alatri, at the foot of Mount Sant'Angelo in Formis, and was used as a leper colony that was active until the seventeenth century.

The façade is preceded by a portico and has a doorway with a narrow bezel topped with a lancet window.

The church has a nave with three large arches that support the roof and on the walls you can admire frescoes dedicated to Mary Magdalene, as well as saints, attributed to the local painter Antonio da Alatri.

On the entrance wall of the church there is a large picture painted by Raffaele Zappelli in 1877 depicting Saint Christopher and the Child Jesus.

Alatri. Church of the Lady

The church of the Lady is located outside the city center on the road to Fiuggi and dates back to the thirteenth century.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it has suffered a major resructuring with the entrance moved to the opposite side and the construction of a neo-Gothic facade.

The interior presents itself with both styles, that is, with original Gothic arches and an eighteenth-century polychrome coffered ceiling with fake trusses.

The presbytery is covered by a coffered ceiling decorated with rosettes while the choir, above the entrance, is covered by a cross vault decorated with a starry sky.

Inside are old votive paintings such as an enthroned Madonna and Child with four figures of saints, and a fresco of the Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist, attributed to Antonio da Alatri.

Alatri. Church of Our Lady of Loreto

The small Church of Our Lady of Loreto in Alatri was built in 1642 by Giovanni Antonio Marra, perhaps to fulfill a vow made during a pilgrimage to Loreto.

In 1869 works were carried out to lower the entry and the internal level, following the placement of the road Via del Colle.

The church was destroyed by an army allied bombing in 1943 after which only the perimeter walls were left standing.

Here, according to tradition, the miracle occurred of the transformation of the host into flesh.

In 1990 the Brotherhood of San Sisto and the Church of St. Paul bought and restored the church.

Church of the Piarists (Scolopi) by Matteo Odargi

The Church of the Piarists - Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools - was built in Alatri between 1734 and 1745 on the plans of Brother Benedict Margariti from Manduria and is dedicated to the Wedding of the Virgin.

In the eighteenth century Alatri went through a prosperous period thanks to the textile industry and the city was enriched with several works.

The facade is made of travertine and draws some styles of the famous architect Borromini with two horizontal sections that can be found in the front door and a central window.

The original plan included two twin bell towers in the facade.

The church has a Greek cross plan and ends with an apse and a large dome supported by arches. The interior has monochromatic decorations made with stucco while the walls contrast with the grand eighteenth-century paintings.

On the central altar is the painting of "Wedding of the Virgin" of Spinetti Carmine 1731, while on the two side are the paintings of the Crucifixion of the Venetian painter Benedetto Mora and the painting of St. Joseph Calasanz, realized in the second half of the eighteenth century to celebrate the founding father from the Scolopi Order.

The church is closed to worship and hosts exhibitions, events and concerts.

Alatri. Church of San Silvestro

The church of San Silvestro is located in the medieval area of ​​Alatri called Piagge and was built between the tenth and eleventh centuries in a single nave in the Romanesque style.

In 1331 the building was expanded with the addition of the left aisle and sacristy.

The Romanesque style is reflected in the simplicity of the external lines and, indoor, in the sobriety with the ceiling made of wooden trusses.

The church has two naves and the main one ends with an apse next to which is the wonderful twelfth century fresco of San Silvestro with the dragon.

Other frescoes of the church date back to the twelfth and fifteenth century and are representations of the New Testament and Saints.

A small staircase within the Church leads to the crypt, an irregular area with ancient Byzantine-style frescoes representing a Holy Blessing.
