Trivigliano. Church of Sant'Elena

The small church of Sant'Elena is located at the entrance of the village cemetery of Trivigliano.

The interior is very simple in line with its functions.

As part of the celebrations of Sant'Oliva, during the night procession, this church is one of the main stages in which the procession stops to pray and sing hymns.

During this break, firecrackers and small fireworks are let off.

The church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie in Trivigliano and entrusted to the care of the Brotherhood of St Joseph was in the past inhabited by a hermit.

Behind the presbytery was recently found a cave with inside some objects for worship.

It is a single nave and still has the altar attached to the bottom wall, where in a niche a canvas is painted with a beautiful image of Our Lady of Grace.

In Trivigliano, the small church of Santa Oliva is located below the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The crypt is made up of two square plan spaces.

In a niche above the altar lies the ancient statue of the patron saint who, according to tradition, cannot be moved from his seat, under penalty of strong hail, damaging to the crops.

The first mention of this little chapel is 1295.

The saint, originally from the nearby Anagni, is celebrated on June 11 of each year.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta is of medieval origin and has undergone much remodeling until its present eighteenth-century appearance.

It has a single nave with elevated presbytery and small side chapels dedicated to the many saints revered by the community of Trivigliano.

The great altarpiece represents the Assumption of the Virgin and dates back to the eighteenth century.

The baptistery has a stone font dating from the XII to XIII centuries. Above the entrance door is an organ of the seventeenth century.

Outside, walled in the base in stone floor at the left of the entrance door and on the facade of the bell tower, are decorative medieval fragments testify to the antiquity of the building.

Cave- Chiesa SantAnatolia by Bettiol
Cave- Chiesa SantAnatolia by Bettiol

The church of Sant'Anatolia in Cave is also called Santa Maria di Rapello and is quoted in 1669 records of a pastoral visit to Cave by Cardinal Antonio Barberini on July 10, the day when the festival of Sant'Anatolia is celebrated.

The little church was owned by the brotherhood of SS. Crocifisso, and here was a miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin which became a pilgrimage destination.

It has a rectangular shape with a cross vault roof cover and is illuminated by two rectangular windows.

On the roof there is a sail shaped bell tower and in the attic an ossuary.

Inside the church there are frescoes dating from the 15th to the 17th century.

Cave. Sanctuary of Madonna del Campo

The sanctuary of Madonna del Campo was built in Cave in the place of the battle between the Romans and Prenestini versus Volsci and Ernici of 267 AC.

In this place, in 1655, was found a Byzantine image of a Madonna with the Christ Child in her arms with Saints Peter and Paul.

Here a church has built.

Perhaps the image belonged to a crypt of the ancient church of St. Peter, which had been destroyed.

The works for the construction of the sanctuary began in 1659.

But works were immediately stopped to allow to continue the construction of the new Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The construction of the church was restored only in 1703, when the people wanted to thank Madonna del Campo for saving it from earthquakes.

The façade of the sanctuary has two levels with a bell tower on each side and at the top there is a central window with two niches at the sides.

The central wooden portal is surmounted by a marble tombstone with a dedication to the Virgin, and two smaller portals on the sides.

The interior has a single nave with a double staircase in the centre from which the crypt is accessed, where the painting of Madonna del Campo is kept.

On the windows of the apse the Annunciation and Resurrection are represented in images.

In the centre of the square in front of the church, in 1905, a column was placed with a corinthian capital surmounted by a cross.

The cross replaced an image of the twin-tailed siren that is a symbol of the town of Cave.
